Laboratoire Pierre Aigrain

[hal-01172479] The mechanisms of plaster drying
Date: 7 juil 2015 - 15:37
Desc: We show that the drying rate of plaster pastes is significantly lower than that expected for a pure liquid evaporating from a simple homogeneous porous medium. This effect is enhanced by the air flow velocity and the initial solid/water ratio. Further tests under various conditions and with the help of additional techniques (MRI, ESEM, Microtomography) for measuring the drying rate and local characteristics (water content, porosity) prove that this effect is due to the crystallization of gypsum ions below the sample free surface, which creates a dry region and decreases the drying rate by increasing the length of the path the vapor has to follow before reaching the free surface.
[hal-01304877] Sensitive Radio-Frequency Measurements of a Quantum Dot by Tuning to Perfect Impedance Matching
Date: 20 avr 2016 - 15:13
Desc: Electrical readout of spin qubits requires fast and sensitive measurements, which are hindered by poor impedance matching to the device. We demonstrate perfect impedance matching in a radio-frequency readout circuit, using voltage-tunable varactors to cancel out parasitic capacitances. An optimized capacitance sensitivity of 1.6 aF/Hz−−−√ is achieved at a maximum source-drain bias of 170−μV root-mean-square and with a bandwidth of 18 MHz. Coulomb blockade in a quantum-dot is measured in both conductance and capacitance, and the two contributions are found to be proportional as expected from a quasistatic tunneling model. We benchmark our results against the requirements for single-shot qubit readout using quantum capacitance, a goal that has so far been elusive.
[hal-02415799] Parametric amplification and squeezing with an ac- and dc-voltage biased superconducting junction
Date: 17 déc 2019 - 12:00
Desc: We theoretically investigate a near-quantum-limited parametric amplifier based on the nonlinear dynamics of quasiparticles flowing through a superconducting-insulator-superconducting junction. Photon-assisted tunneling, resulting from the combination of dc- and ac-voltage bias, gives rise to a strong parametric interaction for the electromagnetic modes reflected by the junction coupled to a transmission line. We show phase-sensitive and phase-preserving amplification, together with single- and two-mode squeezing. For an aluminum junction pumped at twice the center frequency, $\omega_0/2\pi=6$~GHz, we predict narrow-band phase-sensitive amplification of microwaves signals to more than 20 dB, and broadband phase-preserving amplification of 20 dB over a 1.2 GHz 3-dB bandwidth. We also predict single- and two-mode squeezing reaching more than -12 dB over 5.3 GHz 3-dB bandwidth. Moreover, with a simple impedance matching circuit, we demonstrate 3 dB bandwidth reaching 4.3 GHz for 20 dB of gain. A key feature of the device is that its performance can be controlled in-situ with the applied dc- and ac-voltage biases.
[hal-02318665] RF-Quantum Capacitance of the Topological Insulator Bi 2 Se 3 in the Bulk Depleted Regime
Date: 1 déc 2020 - 13:15
Desc: A metal-dielectric topological-insulator capacitor device based on hexagonal-boron-nitrate-(h-BN) encapsulated CVD-grown Bi 2 Se 3 is realized and investigated in the radio-frequency regime. The rf quantum capacitance and device resistance are extracted for frequencies as high as 10 GHz and studied as a function of the applied gate voltage. The superior quality h-BN gate dielectric combined with the optimized transport characteristics of CVD-grown Bi 2 Se 3 (n ∼ 10 18 cm −3 in 8 nm) on h-BN allow us to attain a bulk depleted regime by dielectric gating. A quantum-capacitance minimum and a linear variation of the capacitance with the chemical potential are observed revealing a Dirac regime. The topological surface state in proximity to the gate is seen to reach charge neutrality, but the bottom surface state remains charged and capacitively coupled to the top via the insulating bulk. Our work paves the way toward implementation of topological materials in rf devices.
