Integrated Red Blood Cell Biology
Présentation
We are a mixed research unit Inserm UMR_S 1134 and University Paris Diderot – Paris 7 located at the French National Institute of Blood Transfusion (INTS).
- Objectives : Investigate physiological and molecular aspects of pathological mechanisms of erythrocytes by the use of cellular and mouse-models, human blood samples and patient cohorts, and complementary in-silico approaches.
- Methods : In-vitro, ex-vivo, in-vivo and in-silico approaches. Use of in-house platforms for flow cytometry, cellular imaging and bioinformatics.

The works of the unit concern the clarification of the genic and protein structures of the antigens of blood groups, the molecular analysis of their polymorphisms and the understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in certain hereditary disorders of the erythroïd membrane.
The unit focuses on the properties of human red blood cells (erythrocytes).
Experimental and in-silico methods are used for an integrative approach to the understanding of the interaction between extracellular ligands, transmembrane proteins and the cytoskeleton that define the antigenic properties (e.g. blood group) of erythrocytes.
These interactions are studied in normal and pathological situations (hereditary anemia, malaria, sickle-cell disease) with a particular interest in the structure and function of the plasma membrane of erythrocytes.
