In this essay we would like to relate the emergence of a parasite-cinema, one that expresses itself through predatory forms of capture and communication , where images pullulate out of control (but do not destroy the body of the host), to Artaud's understanding of plague as a proliferation of communication. [hal-04491922] From Milton’s Paradise Lost to Blake’s Milton
Date: 6 Mar 2024 - 11:42
Desc: This chapter traces Milton’s ambivalent light and dark images in Paradise Lost in William Blake’s illuminated book Milton: A Poem in Two Books and John Martin’s mezzotint illustrations to Paradise Lost. It starts with Blake’s visual transposition of Milton’s ‘dark materials’, focusing on clouded light as a symbol of blindness and sublime vision, before addressing the paradox of dark light. It then examines different nightscapes, which are generative of textual and visual ambiguities. Blake’s variations on light are then compared to Martin’s chiaroscuro effects. The artists’ respective engraving techniques are shown to offer different treatments of light and shadow. Through the medium change from the verbal to the visual, their engravings offer a milieu in which potent Miltonic images are able to resonate and are substantialized. The chapter concludes by recalling how prominent Paradise Lost was for Romantic artists, who found powerful inspiration in Milton’s poem.
[hal-02931117] Henry James across Borders
Date: 4 sep 2020 - 19:45
Desc: This essay explores the opposition between the figures of the cosmopolitan and the patriot in a selection of James’s letters and travel writings. It focuses on the crossing of borders as revelatory of the mutual haunting of the “native” and the “alien.” But crossing the frontier also entails encountering the representatives of State violence. Through James’s mise en scène of his ambivalent fascination for the martial figure of the soldier, the frontier becomes a critical locus for the queering of identities and affiliations.

Under the nazi Occupation of France, when Pétainist discourse used chopped quotations of Péguy in strange ways, it was not an easy task. And Péguy's reputation was marred. For some, he has been better left forgotten. But in fact, in an era that focuses on profit for profit's sake, writers like Péguy challenge the way things work, and keep us wondering if we can not do better. This is the first time that the Amitié Charles Péguy's bulletin has been published in English. The guiding idea for this issue has been to present a few perspectives that indicate how Péguy is viewed in the English speaking world today, suggesting how relevant he is to the 21st Century, and also stimulating more interest in Péguy internationally.

[hal-04447334] Immigration and Exile Foreign-Language Press in the UK and in the US Connected Histories of the 19th and 20th Centuries
Date: 8 fév 2024 - 16:30
Desc: Both Britain and the United States have had a long history of harbouring foreign political exiles, who often set up periodicals which significantly contributed to community-building and political debates. However, this varied and complex journalism has received little attention to date, particularly regarding the languages in which it was produced. This wide-ranging edited volume brings together for the first time interdisciplinary case studies of the exile foreign-language press (in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Flemish, Polish, among other languages) across Britain and the US, establishing a useful comparative framework to explore how periodicals tackled key political, linguistic and literary issues from the 19th century to the present day. Building on the existing literature on the exile foreign-language press in the United States and developing the study of this phenomenon in the British context, Immigration and Exile Foreign-Language Press in the UK and in the US offers fresh perspectives into how these marginalised periodicals influenced the political, economic and social contexts that brought them into existence. This is a contribution to the burgeoning field of transnational periodicals and will be of interest to anyone studying the history of the Anglo-American press, the history of immigration and cultural history.

[hal-01378462] Romanticism and Philosophy
Date: 10 oct 2016 - 12:22
Desc: This volume brings together a wide range of scholars to offer new perspectives on the relationship between Romanticism and philosophy. The entanglement of Romantic literature with philosophy is increasingly recognized, just as Romanticism is increasingly viewed as European and Transatlantic, yet few studies combine these coordinates and consider the philosophical significance of distinctly literary questions in British and American Romantic writings. The essays in this book are concerned with literary writing as a form of thinking, investigating the many ways in which Romantic literature across the Atlantic engages with European thought, from 18th- and 19th-century philosophy to contemporary theory. The contributors read Romantic texts both as critical responses to the major debates that have shaped the history of philosophy, and as thought experiments in their own right. This volume thus examines anew the poetic philosophy of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Blake, Shelley, and Clare, also extending beyond poetry to consider other literary genres as philosophically significant, such as Jane Austen’s novels, De Quincey’s autofiction, Edgar Allan Poe’s tales, or Emerson’s essays. Grounded in complementary theoretical backgrounds and reading practices, the various contributions draw on an impressive array of writers and thinkers and challenge our understanding not only of Romanticism, but also of what we have come to think of as "literature" and "philosophy.

Date: 10 oct 2016 - 12:26
Desc: The various contributions in this collection explore the kinship and the conflicts which bind literature and art to philosophy during two major phases of Romanticism, in Germany and in England, opening passages and highlighting continuities between the philosophical ambitions and innovations of Romantic artists and the legacy of Romanticism in philosophy and literary and aesthetic theory. Each in its own way, the essays gathered here view Romanticism as a key moment in the history of thought and examine how Romanticism both inherits and departs from the tradition of philosophy, from Antiquity to the Enlightenment, as much as they explore the many legacies of Romanticism in contemporary philosophical debates up to Deconstruction and beyond. Written by philosophers, literary scholars and art historians, the different chapters not only confront British Romanticism with its German counterpart, in an effort to reconfigure our understanding of these two national "moments" in the history of Romanticism, but they also work at the crossroads of several disciplines, true to the inaugural spirit of Romanticism, at a time when generic and institutional boundaries were challenged and largely redrawn, and when art, literature and philosophy as we still know them today first emerged.

Date: 3 juin 2021 - 12:16
Desc: The ever disappearing I of Emily Dickinson’s poetry is, this paper argues, an audacious poetic wager that politically speculates on death as both a term and "a term between", and stages the ultimate dissolution of subject, voice and representation through an endless play with, and pleasurable suspension of, the poetic sentence. Holding to the body (of the poem, of the poet) while poetically erasing the marks—color, caste, gender—that shut it out of political representation is an aesthetic experimentation with the limits and constraints of a certain form of democracy that wagers on impersonality as the precondition of impersonation. In Dickinson’s poetry, however, the dying is palpable, sensitive, erotic. The poem resists doing away with the body; it does not take for granted the posthumous recognition of a soul "at the white heat". Rather, Dickinson’s poetry embodies the "space between" and proves it "possibler". Doing the dying, in that sense, may well be the poet’s cunning response to the injunction of abstraction of mid-nineteenth century political representation.

[hal-03985787] Building by burning? Ephemeral art and permanent community at Burning Man
Date: 13 fév 2023 - 13:21
Desc: The Burning Man festival started in 1986 with a spontaneous moment of “shared togetherness” sparked by the burning of an eight-foot wooden man on Baker Beach. First set against the countercultural backdrop of San Francisco, the event now gathers 70,000 inhabitants for one week at an ephemeral city in the Nevada desert for “an annual experiment in temporary community dedicated to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance” (Burning Man Project, “The Event”). Black Rock City is impermanent: much of its art is burnt to the ground, its 70,000 inhabitants disperse back to their homes around the globe after the burn, and the city leaves no trace. Yet community, with its emphasis on stability, permanence, and strong ties, is one of its structuring principles. How can transience and community work together? This paper will explore how community is imagined, structured and fostered in this temporary city. It will examine what forms of “art” are present in the city, and interrogate the role of temporary art and artistic encounters in the construction of a community. It will focus on the roles of participatory experience and maker culture, and suggest that the building of the city by all the participants, this “making together” is perhaps the most valuable form of art created at Burning Man – the art of living together which binds people together and creates a community. It will conclude by looking at how this community-oriented event has turned into a global non-profit organization which supports over a hundred regional events worldwide, and which encourages the development of local communities through that of the “imagined community” of Burners.
[hal-04378966] Introduction. Rewriting the Soul: The Persistence of a Concept
Date: 8 jan 2024 - 11:34
Desc: The opening chapter argues that the now oft-neglected concept of the soul has remained relevant to considerations of literature, art and politics. After a brief overview of its metaphysical and religious origins, the authors examine the evolving significance of the soul within an increasingly secular society, with particular emphasis on the gradual dissociation of the concept from established religion and metaphysics and its alignment with psychology. They go on to analyze the changing understanding of the meaning of the soul in the post-world war II postsecular context. They emphasize the far-reaching and enduring epistemological function of the concept, and elaborate on how the chapters of the book investigate its reinterpretation across three domains: literature, art, and politics.
[hal-04378953] The Persistence of the Soul in Literature, Art and Politics
Date: 8 jan 2024 - 11:29
Desc: This book analyses the evolution of literary and artistic representations of the soul, exploring its development through different time periods. The volume combines literary, aesthetic, ethical, and political considerations of the soul in texts and works of art from the seventeenth to the twenty-first centuries, spanning cultures and schools of thought. Drawing on philosophical, religious and psychological theories of the soul, it emphasizes the far-reaching and enduring epistemological function of the concept in literature, art and politics. The authors argue that the concept of the soul has shaped the understanding of human life and persistently irrigated cultural productions. They show how the concept of soul was explored and redefined by writers and artists, remaining relevant even as it became removed from its ancient or Christian origins.
